WCH lectured widely and wrote in both the fields of architectural history/preservation and genealogy. He edited two volumes of letters (The letters of Don Juan McQueen to his family, written from Spanish East Florida, 1791-1807; and The letters of Robert Mackay to his wife, written from ports in America and England, 1795-1816). He also wrote the text for Savannah, a book of etchings and drawings by Christopher Murphy. His articles on Santo Domingan emigres appeared in The Maryland Historical Magazine, The Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, and other journals, and were based on the research done at Harvard for his history honors thesis (See Boxes 32-36). Folders 41-62 contain: drafts of his publications with textual criticism from friends and family members; research notes and documents; drafts of speeches; correspondence about speaking engagements; press releases, reviews, clippings and programs. Three audio tape cassettes of his lectures on Savannah's architectural heritage are in Box 5, folder 62-A.A draft of WCH's book on Savannah architectural history is filed with the Architectural History series.

John McQueen, known as Don Juan McQueen (1751-1807), was the son of John McQueen and Ann Dalton McQueen of Charleston. He was a large land owner in South Carolina and Georgia. He served in the Revolution as a Captain in the Navy of South Carolina, 1778-1780. For a few years, McQueen worked as a planter, but soon became interested in land speculation.
